What is the hippotherapy?

The hippotherapy is one sort of the therapeutic riding.

The word "hippo" is from greece, means: horse.

The hippotherapy is a kind of curing in what the horse is a "living medical aid". The method can utilize the psychological and physiological properties of the riding. It is a good therapy-process in cases of locomotor disorder, posture and movement- function problems. It is doable with the hippotheraputist’s, qualificated physiotherapist’s and somatopedagogue’s control. Mostly the patient rides at a walking- pace without saddle.

The hippotherapy is based on the neurology rules, what uses the three dimension movement- impulses and the horse’s move what is matching the human walk. These impulses step out from the horse’s back- feet, run through his/ her spine and then connect to the patient’s pelvis. The hippotherapy is a special type of the neurophysiological- physiotherapy, what uses the rhythmical and three dimensioned swings of the back of the walking horse. It geneterates such bearing and balance reactions from the rider, what are automatic in the healthy walk. EMG and shot- analysis has showed that the horse’s move is writing down sine- curve like the human- movement. When a human is walking his/ her pelvis moves like the horse swings passively it at the riding. For that the horse is an irreplaceable "appliance" for mobilization of the patient’s pelvis and trunk and building the right walk- model.

We can transmit such movement- models for the rider patient what are matching the human walk. There isn’t other physiotherapy- method what can transmit similar physiological, complex, onward movement- impulses for the patient. The hippotherapy is a continuous, rhythmical, more- dimensioned therapy. It is realizable only by a horse’s help.

For that the specialists advice the hippotherapy mostly for neurological- disease and orthopaedic clinical pictures. The patient’s bearing gets better (the cramped position slacks), joint- movemets get stronger, muscles elongate, perception can develop, balance and movement- coordination get better. When the patient is sitting astride the cramped muscles of the legs get slack, the horse’s body- warmth relaxes the muscles and helps the calm state of mind. During the process the motion of the back-legs and hip of the horse run through the patient and generates alike bearing- reaction what is automatic in walking. So the central nervous system can get those stimuli by this what would develop at walking.

The horse steps cca. 90-110 times in a minute. The patient gets 2000 physiological impulses during a 20 minutes therapy. The specialists listen the effects of the therapy for 25 years. Sitting on the horseback the human pelvis and trunk are affected by the horse’s move. The horse’s walk- method is able to create these impulses. During the hippotherapy 90-110 swings get to the rider’s pelvis and trunk in a minute. These swings permit of continuous training of the diseased muscle- tone regulation, and bearing- reliance- and balance reactions.

The physiotherapeutist can develop the sensomotor and coordination with using the acceleration and centrifugal force of the move of the horse’s back and with appropriate exercises.

These positive benefits show up complex by done hippotherapy in a professional workmanlike manner:

- trunk- training what is correct for the walking
- joint mobilization, elongating the short muscles
- correcting the abnormal movement- methods
- tone- reflexactivity inhibition
- building the movement- lines, movements automation
- development of the coordination and sensomotor
- making contact with the horse

To sit astride claims a wider seat from the human. At cerebrospinal injuries and some developmental disorder and the spastic leg- oncoming muscles make the walk difficult. Sitting astride forces these muscles passively into the right position, relax and extend them, because the patient turns outside his/her feet for staying on the horseback. The strecher and relaxing exercises are parts of the physiotherapy too. The patient needs some warm- up exercises before the riding.

Applicability of the hippotherapy...

Applicable, suggested at cases:

- central paresis, plegia (infantil cerebralparesis, multiplex sclerosis, posttraumatic spastic syndroma, symptom remains from vascular, arthritic sickness or tumor)
- extrapyramidal movement- disorder
- muslce- tone disorder (including the psychological muscle- tone problems too)
- coordination- and balance disorder, ataxia
- some locomotor and muscle disease

Non applicable, not suggested at cases:

- pain
- all kind of acut states and course
- missing headcontroll
- inadequate mobility at hip- joint, pelvis, low- vertebral area
- extreme, untreatable spasmus
- fast progressive, intensive or fixed scoliosis
- if the patient isn’t able to do any active movement and self- correction
- if the neurological condition gets worse during the therapy
- if the therapy couldn’t be safe by the patient’s body- weight or state

Goals of the hippotherapy...

- Muscle- tone regulation.
- Tone- relaxing in the legs, tone- building in the trunk.
- Taking an upright position, building the trunk- controll.
- Activating the walk- specific trunk- reactions.
- Joint mobilization, manipulation, running in the movement- lines.
- Building the muscle- balance.
- Symmetrical seat by the pelvis- movements.
- Coordination- schooling by sensomotor.
- Balance- schooling and development.
- Correction of the abnormal movement- patterns.
- Balking the tone- reflexactivity.
- Automation of the right movements.
- Rhythmical trunk- coordination.
- Stimulating of the central nervous system, starting- up it’s development processes.

For the above aims- keeping and development of the patient’s condition- we need a patient with correct indication, a special qualificated horse, a professional controlled therapy.

Our goals are breaking the running effects of the injuries (handicap) and giving them a better direction.
